Goodbye Grandpa

Wednesday 13/06/07 will be a day i remember as a great loss to me. At around 08:15 my granddad took his last breath. At this time i was heading to school for morning P.E. Just b4 hitting the highway, a received a chilling phone call from my mum,"Ryan.....come home now. Ah Kong has stopped breathing."

Immediately i rushed home to pick up mum and then we chionged to his house to find that he was no longer alive. As i knelt down beside his bed. I could not help but reminisce about the time we spent together. Jogging at ECP, Dinner, playing Table-tennis....watching and hearing him swear(fluently). I felt sad but apparently only my eyes were dry. I have no idea why i shed no tears but i felt kinda inhuman, cold and unfeeling at that time.

After around two hours, the adults went around co-ordinating grandpa's funeral. At around 6-ish all the proceedures like embalming and moving the coffin from the hearse to the display area were taken care of. All that was left was the long LONG hours of prayer and chanting by the monks and some of us. We got catering of vegetarian food and lemme tell you it was really nothing special. Frankly, i don't mind vegetarian food i even like vegetarian food but these dishes tasted quite bad.

Onto talk about the monks...(sorry) the way the head monk chants makes you feel like they are going on in Tamil,Malay, Sanskrit and incredibly slurred chinese. My Mum attributed this to his experience cause he could memorize the 300++++++ pages of sutras so naturally he would go at incredibly quick speeds since he knew it so well.

His appprentice however, is a different story. His pronounciation is pretty good and i was happy to find i could follow his chanting. I find its like the opposite of the chinese music industry. Old singers have immaculate pronounciation. Old Monks have slurred pronounciation.(No examples though sorry)

The prayers lasted about 2.5 hours for Wednesday-Friday and on Saturday(b4 cremation) it lasted the WHOLE DAY from 08:00-21:30. However we gave grandad his new house,car and loads of cash Saturday night

Sunday was the day grandad was cremated also it was the day everyone cried the most,myself included( only two drops though). After his cremation we went to the temple to place his tablet then it was back to granddad's for dinner. It was about 21:00ish when i left for home and i went to bed early that night remebering "Ah Kong".

Monday was collection of ashes or in grandpa's case, bones. It was also the day where we put Ah Kong's remains in the urn. Lunch followed suit and I went to Ding Tai Feng at Swisshotel to have delicious dumplings. Ah Kong's funeral is important but so is food!

Tuesday.The final day its quite a blur one for me i truly cannot recall what i did maybe this is a sign that i acceppted the fact that Ah Kong was gone....Well there was a good saying in hellgate though....Remember The Dead. Fight For The Living. I think i'll do just that.
