Joining Choir

Sunday, April 29, 2007

After realizing that ODAC had kicked me out, i was in a dilemma deciding what CCA to join. The Choir, or The Table-tennis team. Thankfully, i had a classmate(Kenneth) in the choir who gave an insider's perspective of the choir and brought me to audition to join the choir. Thankfully, i made it throught auditions and I was posted to the base section.Once with the bases,I was promptly handed a thick stack of scores that had to be memorized within one month in time for the concert. Fortnately, they were having their sectionals(each section's individual training without the conductor) so they could slow down the training to ensure i learnt certain basic techniques and how to sing as base in the choir.

The next day was The Choir's training with the conductor Mr Kuay(do not really noe how to spell it so please forgive me) who turned out to be a friendly conductor provided he was in a good mood which could change rather drastically.

After surviving two and a half weeks of joining the choir, voice checks were held to see who was ready to sing in the concert which was a really stressful thing for me as I had not even memorized my scores and we were not allowed to look at our scores. No one was dropped from the concert and i did manage to internalize an average of 80-85% of all the 23 songs in The Choir's concert repertoire.

During this time however, i had to learn how to manage my schoolwork quickly or my studies would suffer. Although am keeping up with homework rather well, my revision is still lagging behind.

I also learned that choir members actually spend quite a bit of money on concert costumes and the total cost of these turned out to be more than that of the concert tickets(the proceeds were supposed to subsidise our trip to Pattaya,Thailand.Ironic??Hell yes!!)

On concert day itself, I left class early at 10:45 to head to the choir room to meet the rest of the choir for a last minute practice before heading to the esplanade for concert runs. A bus was chartered to take us to the esplanade(i slept through the whole trip god knows what i missed) and once there we made our way to our changing rooms which were shared by 5 ppl.

Concert runs started immediately after that.We had two concert runs. One to check standing positions and accoustic check and the other one was a full rehearsal with costume changes included.

Frankly, the concert itself was short and quite a blur but at least i will always remember the process and remember singing with The AJC Choir or with any choir at all. This is one event where i will remember being the performer and not just the audience i will cherish the memory always thank you AJC Choir for giving such a great experience.

WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!Choir ROX!
